About Crown Jewelry in Altus, OK
John and Debra Borders both loved jewelry, and both wanted a business of their own. In 1984 they put those two things together and opened Crown Jewelry in Altus, Oklahoma. More than four decades later, the store is still in the family, and the people helping you at the counter are the same people who size, set, and design the pieces.
The Family Behind the Counter
John has since retired from the jewelry business. Debra has not. She works part time now, but she is still the lead designer on custom jewelry, which is the part of the work she has always been drawn to.
Day to day, the store is run by Shannon Preston, John and Debra's son-in-law. The jeweler at the bench is Darren Cramer, Shannon's brother-in-law. Shannon and Darren have both been working at Crown Jewelry for over 25 years, so if you bought a ring here years ago, there is a good chance one of them helped you.

Why Having a Jeweler On Site Matters
Designing and repairing jewelry is what this store specializes in. With Darren working in the building, a loose prong, a ring that needs sizing, or a broken chain can be looked at in person rather than boxed up and sent elsewhere. The same goes for design work. A Trained Watchmaker on Staff
Watches need a different set of skills, and Crown Jewelry has a dedicated watchmaker for them. Dan Mongeon retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2003 and then attended the watchmaking school at Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee. He graduated in 2005 and received certificates from the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Education Program and the American Watchmakers and Clockmakers Institute.
